National
Federation of the Blind
NFB
Founded
in 1940, the NFB is the largest organization of the
blind in America. The Federation is dedicated to the
complete integration of the blind into society on a
basis of equality. To accomplish this goal, the NFB
works toward ending legal, economic, and social discrimination;
educates the public to new concepts concerning blindness;
and assists blind people in the achievement of their
full potential.
The
Federation operates the National Center for the Blind,
the National Research and Training Institute for the
Blind, and the International Braille and Technology
Center for the Blind, all located in Baltimore. The
NFB also publishes the Braille
Monitor, a publication which covers the
news and issues important to the blind. The NFB sponsors
programs in the areas of education, literacy, jobs,
technology, and concerns of the elderly blind. Chapters
in every state meet monthly. An annual National Convention
takes place in a different city each year.
